Agile Contract Roasting

Welcome to The Roasters.

This initiative comes from a collection of coffee roasteries, keen to approach contract coffee roasting in a new more agile and more dynamic way. Each roastery has their own take on what they consider to be great coffee, driven by passionate coffee fanatics. So, you get the benefit of different points of view, from different roasteries across New Zealand and Australia, and the ability to pick and choose who, what, when and how… based on your needs, and what you want. Agile contract coffee roasting at its best.

There are three roasteries in Auckland (one boutique, one specialty, and the third one is able to handle very large volume), two in Wellington (one boutique, and one specialty) and if we jump over the ditch to Australia, there is one in Sydney (specialty) and one in Melbourne (able to handle large volume). Logically, you may choose to work with a roastery close to where you are based, but don’t let logic stop you from exploring the other roasteries. It’s not hard to jump on a plane.

It’s important to note, with so many roasteries and people in the mix, your experience will be managed by one person. An expert in coffee, that works with the roasteries and knows the coffee fanatics working at each site very well. They will be your first contact; they will help guide you and will help make sure the process is a smooth one. Stephanie is the New Zealand manager, and Samuel is the Australian manager. Top people.

The coffee experience that exists within each roastery is extensive.

From second generation coffee roasters with a combined half a century worth of experience, through to Q Graders with experience around the globe. From green bean buyers who have spent over a decade working with coffee farmers at numerous origins, through to coffee roasters who have worked for the best of the best on the global stage. The people you deal with get coffee. They are passionate fanatics, who are always learning more and exploring what can be achieved.

The difference between mainstream and specialty is a hotly debated topic as the lines between both can become blurred. The point here, is to simply state that across the roasteries we have experience in roasting mid to dark mainstream coffee (using quality coffee beans), through to coffee produced using higher grade coffee beans from specific plantations where we then roast much lighter, with blends that are more complex. Hopefully that hasn’t offended anyone’s specialty or mainstream sensitivity.

Where possible we deal directly with coffee farms. In some regions like Africa, where a third party is mandated, we cannot have a direct relationship. It’s important for us to understand where our coffee comes from, and to develop long-term relationships with farmers to maintain quality and consistency; as well as to make sure very is dealt with in a fair manner.

Agility is the fundamental principle at the heart of The Roasters initiative. There are seven roasteries that are part of the group. Each has their own roasting machinery, experts (from head roaster to q-graders to green bean buyers), and experience roasting coffee for their brand, and others. So, you can pick and choose, change if you want to, combine expertise and capability. It is all up to you and what best suits your needs and vision. It’s exciting and we would love to work with you to create something special.
